FAMILY LABRISOMIDAE

WEED BLENNIES, FOUREYE BLENIES

It is difficult to characterize these fishes on the basis of a particular feature, but they possess cycloid scales with radii only on the anterior part and most species have more dorsal-fin spines than segmented rays; (a few species lack soft rays entirely). There are often cirri (filamentous appendages) on the nape, nostrils, and above the eye.

This family contains small, elongate fishes that live on the reef's surface or among weeds. Their diet consists of various invertebrates including crabs, gastropod molluscs, chitons, brittle stars, urchins, and polychaetes. They are considerably diverse with regards to shape and most are cryptically colored to blend with the background.

This tropical family contains 16 genera and approximately 102 species. Most are found in the North American tropics, but some species occur in the eastern Atlantic. The genera Starksia (Pacific species only) and Xenomedea are unusual in that they are viviparous. The group has attracted the attention of several researchers and there are published reviews of Eastern Pacific Labrisomus (Hubbs,1953), Malacotenus (Springer, 1958), Paraclinus (Rosenblatt and Parr, 1969), and Starksia and Xenomedea (Rosenblatt and Taylor, 1971). In addition, Hubbs (1952) provided a general review of this family (formerly recognized as part of the Clinidae) and a partial revision of the Eastern Pacific species. In our region there are 37 species (all endemics) from eight genera (three endemics).
