FAMILY SCOMBRIDAE

TUNAS, BONITOS, MACKERELS, WAHOOS

Scombrids are characterized by two dorsal fins that fold into grooves; 5-12 distinct finlets behind the second dorsal and anal fins; the pelvic fins have six rays and are situated below the pectoral fins; the scales are small and smooth; the slender tail base has at least two small keels on each side, sometimes with is a larger keel in between. Unlike typical "cold-blooded" fishes, some tunas have body temperatures several degrees warmer than the surrounding sea.

The scombrids, tunas, mackerels, and bonitos commonly known as, are well known fishes that form the basis of valuable commercial fisheries in many tropical to subtropical regions. Over the past 10 years world catches have generally fluctuated between about five and six million tonnes annually. These fishes are also highly prized by recreational anglers, and throughout much of the world they support important subsistence fisheries. All species are powerful swimmers and some undergo extensive annual migrations. Worldwide the group contains 54 species in 15 genera. In our region 16 species from eight genera are known, six endemics, seven circumtropical species, two Indo-Pacific and one Pacific species.
